Worksite Wellness

By: Cathy Aguirre

Employers increasingly are realizing the value that worksite wellness programs deliver as an effective tool to improve employee health, increase productivity, reduce absenteeism and lower health care costs.

A 2003 report published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) highlighted how important it is for employers to incorporate health promotion as part of their business strategy. The report asserts that preventable diseases place a heavy toll on business, including lower productivity and higher health insurance costs.

The HHS estimates that $1.66 trillion was spent on health care in 2003. and it attributes a majority of those costs to chronic diseases and conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and asthma. Sadly, the money allocated for preventing or controlling these conditions is negligible.

Health Insurance for California Residents

By Krista M. Farmer

A recent news article explained that approximately one in five working Californians has health insurance. If that statistic is true, there are many California residents that lack health coverage. If your employer does not offer a health plan, there are affordable alternatives at your fingertips. Securing health insurance is a few mouse-clicks away.

What are some things you should consider when you’re looking for health insurance?

Remember that insurance is all about risk. You will automatically pay less for health insurance if you are healthy and take care of yourself because you are less of a risk to the insurance company. In other words, exercise, eat healthy and stop smoking. Most insurance companies will automatically give non-smokers a non-smoking discount.

Opinions Vary on Solving The U.S. Healthcare Crisis

Compared to other countries, healthcare in the United States is considered to be top notch but with all its accolades, not everyone in this country has access to medical care. Recently the U.S. government passed the Healthcare Reform Bill to allow all citizens the right to receive health care equally.

Consequences of the Healthcare Reform

People with inherited diseases, for example, would not be penalized for heredity conditions or denied coverage. Healthcare reform brings certain fairness to the system.

In March 2010, the United States Congress succeeded in an attempt to pass a reformation of healthcare. It was an unparalleled success compared to it predecessors. However, the legislation continues to cause concern as to whether healthcare reform will provide improvements to the heath care system.

Most individuals living in developed countries support improvements within any healthcare system. People with certain conditions find healthcare insurance difficult and often impossible to obtain. This is a reflection of the high cost for medical treatments. Health insurance is a product designed to protect some individuals and is paid by all others insured. That is the purpose. Very few individuals in the middle and lower class can afford the high cost of medical treatment especially long-term hospital care. Healthy people will cover the cost of expensive treatments through insurance premiums.

Long-Term Care Insurance

The Top Ten Reasons Why People Need Long Term Care Insurance

10. The government isn't going to pay for long-term care at home, in a nursing home, or in an assisted living center. Medicare pays 100% of long-term care for 20 days and all but $95.00 per day for the next 80 days--after that nothing. However Medicare only pays for skilled care and most long-term care is not skilled care.

9. The national average cost for nursing homes is approximately $105.00 per day. Assisted living ranges anywhere from $50 - $90 per day. If you live on the Eastern Seaboard you can easily spend $50,000 to $80,000 for a year's stay in a nursing home. These costs are perfectly capable of wiping out a lifetime of savings-not to mention the emotional effect long-term care has on a family.

Medicare is a specialized government program that provides health care insurance for elderly or disabled people with ages sixty five and older, which is a port of social security systems. The American Association of Retired Persons, or AARP, provides additional or supplementary insurance plans through different private insurance companies that help providing coverage on certain costs on health care that the main Medicare insurance does not or cannot cover.

The AARP presents a set of Medicare supplement plans that offer additional benefits that are not usually covered by the main Medicare insurance issued by the government. The plans are offered by private insurance companies rather than the federal government. People with eligible ages and conditions are the ones only allowed to purchase any of the AARP Medicare supplement plans.

Medicare Supplement Insurance Help is Easy to Find

Article Submitted by: satrap d

Even those seniors who have, in the past, been well versed in Medicare options have been confused recently with the change in plan offerings that took effect June 1st, 2010. With the Medicare Modernization Act, plans as Plan J and Plan K were eliminated. Their benefits were found to be overlapping with existing plans.

Seniors have options now that they did not have before, too. For instance, plan N is now available in Kansas and other states, which offers a 20% to 30% discount from previously available plans. Plan N involves co-payments on doctor visits and emergency room visits. Other than that it mirrors most other plans that had been available.
